Extension trip 5 Days 4 Night

Excursion to the South, Mon State and Kayin State
(Kyaikhtiyo - Mawlamyine - Hpa An - Yangon)

Tour Code: GMT EX YKMawlamyine 4/5

Day 01 :: Yangon - Bago - Kyaikhtiyo :: B/-/-

In the morning pick-up from your Hotel in Yangon and drive to BAGO (84 km - 1½hour). En route, visit to the Allied War Graves Cemetery near HTAUK KYAN and to KYAIK PUN PAGODA, famous for its four giant Buddhas. In Bago sightseeing includes the SHWEMAWDAW PAGODA, over a thousand years old; its spire is even taller than SHWEDAGON PAGODA. After lunch, continue to KIN PUN 'base camp' (110 km - 3 1/2 hours) and onward to KYAIKTIYO, the 'Golden Rock', a huge boulder completely covered by gold leaves and delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff. From KIN PUN, a steep and rough 11 km dirt road leads to the upper staging point, a journey made in open trucks, which are very crowded. From the 'upper area', travellers must, at present, walk the final stage, approx. 4 km, up steep paths which ascend some 500 m to the GOLDEN ROCK. As an easier alternative to walking, visitors can be carried in sedan chairs by four porters, at an extra cost of approx. US$10.00 p.p. On arrival watch the beauty of sunset or dawn at this important pilgrimage site. Stay overnight at Hotel near Kyaiktiyo.

* Note:
Don't forget your torch light, as it is quite dark when you return back to your Hotel after sun-set!!!

Day 02 :: Kyaikhtiyo - Thaton - Mawlamyine :: B/-/-

After breakfast climb down to base camp and drive to THATON (72 km). There are many legends about Thaton, the first capital of Mon empire. In 1057 king Anawrahta of Bagan conquered Thaton, because king Manuha of Thaton refused to send him the holy Buddhist scriptures "Tripitaka". Through this incident the first united empire was founded by king Anawrahta. Nowadays is not much left from the old glorious Mon Kingdom. Visit SHWE ZAYAN PAYA, built during the early Mon era. Afterwards continue via Mottama (62 km) and cross by ferry to Mawlamyine, the capital of Mon State.

Mottama (Martaban) is situated at the mouth of Thanlwin River and used to be a very important seaport in the 16th Century. On the opposite side of Thanlwin River is Mawlamyine or Moulmein, nowadays the 4th biggest city in Myanmar.

Golden Land "SUVANABHUMI" was mentioned in ancient chronicles.

"SUVANABHUMI: The centre of the state of Suvanabhumi has been presumed to be in the vicinity of Bilin Township and Kelasa Hill in Mon State. The Mon people settled there and established a royal city. It compromised the valleys of the Sittaung and Thanlwin rivers….. Theravada Buddhism first flourished here along with traditional beliefs."

Day 3 :: Mawlamyine - Mudon - Kyaikkami - Setse Beach :: B/-/-

After breakfast drive to MUDON (30 km) and visit the newly built world's biggest reclining Buddha statue (160 m). Afterwards continue to the coastal resort Kyaikkami, also known as Amherst during colonial days. Visit YELE PAYA, famous for the Buddha Statue that was brought from Sri Lanka in ancient time. Then continue to Setse Beach at the Gulf of Martaban, which is still very well known. Enjoy a stroll over the brown sand beach before you will return back to Mawlawyine. Stay overnight at Hotel in Mawlamyine.

Day 4 :: Mawlamyine - Hpa An :: B/-/-

After breakfast, drive to Hpa An (49 km), the capital of Kayin state. Visit downtown area and the market. Today's excursion includes THAMANYAT monastery, whose famous vegetarian monk U Winaya died in December 2003.

Rest of the day at leisure. Stay overnight at Hotel in Hpa An.

Day 5 :: Hpa An - Bilin - Yangon :: B/-/-

In the morning drive to BILIN via Thaton. En route, stop at MYATHABEIQ PAYA and TAUNZAUNG PAYA near the town of Bilin. In the afternoon return back to Yangon.

Here our GMT Service will end.
