What is Lawkanat?
Lawkanat = Lawka (meanaing 'universe') + Nat
(meaning 'spirit or angel')
It can be translated that Lawkanat is the guardian
angel of the universe. Lawkanat was worshiped by the early Myanmar people
before Buddhism dominated in the country thousands of years ago.
As the legend goes... once upon a time, a flying elephant and a dragon
were having a fierce fight. Lawkanat showed up and played some very
pleasant music, that they stopped fighting.
That's why Myanmar people believe that Lawkanat (or sometimes
spelled Lokanat) is recognized as "the gracious symbol of
peace". |
